or Trying to cultivate something like a decentralized archeology of feeling.
Made from concrete, salt, dirt, studio debris, clay, plaster, utility paint, oil, acrylic, damar resin, uv archival spray on stretched canvas.
The product of some of my earliest experiments saltcrusting pigments. Fascinated with the way salt rips through paint--alternatively dissolving and crystallizing out--I was motivated to create a geological, slow-moving piece that captures the techtonic, titanic strength of the earth. I used snow- and ice- dispersion of pigments to help me carry colour without brush-strokes. Clay and utility paint buckle and crack, their pores teased open by the salt. Even the final layers of varnish are bubbled, modified and made matte by the salinity. An encrusted, ancient slice tartarus. Snow-kissed canadiana. The constant force of earth holding us up beneath our feet.
